Hi! This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit. Next Wednesday the library will have a Mario Party video game night in the Schafer Room after hours: 7-8 PM. And next Thursday the library will have a program for adults and young adults on choosing cozy mysteries. If you like reading mysteries with a softer side, come to hear some new title suggestions and enjoy snacks. For both programs, contact the library by Tuesday to sign up.
Many young people can be picky when it comes to what tastes good. However, this is certainly not the case for eleven year old Gladys Gatsby in All Four Stars by Tara Dairman. In fact, she’s a self-taught gourmet who actually likes weird things such as arugula and crème brulee. However, she’s never come close to eating an entire fancy meal; her parents only eat fast food and microwave meals. Then one day the local newspaper contacts Gladys about becoming a restaurant critic after reading her food reviews in an essay contest. It’s Gladys’ dream job! Only problem is, the newspaper thinks Gladys is an adult. Of course Gladys accepts the job, and now has to find her way into restaurants and submit reviews without any one finding out she’s actually a middle school kid.
This title is a chapter book, aimed for readers who are just about Gladys’ age in real life. At nearly 300 pages it’s not a thin book, but Gladys’ adventures will keep you turning the page, and you may just find a new food to try out!
