Spring is just around the corner, which gets many a handyman (and woman!) itching to improve their surroundings. If you’re planning on repairing, improving, or constructing a deck on your home, the library has several books to instruct and inspire. Two older titles recently added to the collection are How to Design & Build Decks & Patios by Ortho Books, and How to Build Decks by Sunset Books. (Only the Sunset Books version is pictured above.) Both have full color photographs and illustrations to help the builder along. Because these are older titles, a review of local regulations and permits may be necessary and don’t forget to check out the latest building materials when gathering supplies.
The book published by Ortho Books is a little more complete in scope, covering the philosophy of creating an outdoor space, providing a short historical narrative of outdoor spaces. At the end of the book is a chapter on paving your yard space beyond a deck or boardwalk. The deck building book published by Sunset Books covers the information in more of a checklist style, with a few workpages that can be copied from the book for patron use. This book goes from start to finish in a practical style.
These books will not appear on the new shelves since they weren’t published recently. To find them you can check our online catalog, or ask a librarian. These will be in the non-fiction section with other books on home improvement and do-it-yourself projects. We always encourage our patrons to browse – our books are free to check out, so take as many as you want! For easy returns, don’t forget our in-wall book and media drop, accessible on the outside of the building.
You can get the books reviewed here and more great titles to watch, read, listen to, or play with at the Port Library at 1718 N. Hersey in Beloit, on the North Campus. This is director Rachel Malay, saying “Thanks for checking us out!”
