“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” is a pretty famous opening line, and if you immediately identified it as being from the Star Wars movies, you’re right! Fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting the seventh movie installment in just over a year. If you want to immerse yourself in the story in a slightly different way in the meantime, give this book a try. William Shakespeare’s Star Wars:Verily, a New Hope by Ivan Doescher re-imagines episode four as a classical play and is written all in iambic pentameter in homage to the famous playwright. If you’re wondering how well Shakespeare and Star Wars go together, the answer is just great! The heroic plotlines and standard character types in the Star Wars universe translate almost seamlessly into the epic storylines Shakespeare was famous for in his tragedies. A few minor changes have been made to the Star Wars story though. For example, a chorus moves the narrative along where a movie would just depict it visually. And while R2-D2 does speak in beeps and whirrs most of the time, asides to the audience are in standard speech and translate the nuanced robotic movements into something that is easily understood on the written page. And, lest you feel part of the story is missing the library also has Shakespeare Star Wars: The Jedi Doth Return and The Empire Striketh Back.
