At the Library

Our genealogy resources include the following and more:

  • Cemetery records for Elmwood Cemetery and St. John's Cemetery, as well as a guide to the other cemeteries in Mitchell County.
  • Various books on the history of Kansas.
  • Various resources on Mitchell County inlcuding part of the history of Mitchell County (There is NO one published book on only the history of Mitchell County or Beloit.)
  • An incomplete collection of Beloit High School yearbooks.
  • A copy of the History of Kansas, by Andreas.
  • Issues of Beloit newspapers on microfilm dating back to 1871. (Our collection of back issues are as complete as possible, but not comprehensive.)
  • Death and birth records in bound form and on microfilm from 1982 back.

All of these resources may be viewed at the Port Library, but are NOT available for checkout.

If patrons have questions while in the library, the staff is glad to assist where able for a short while.

By Mail or E-Mail

If patrons or potential patrons of the Port Library cannot physically visit the library, they may ask librarians to perform short genealogical searches. Because our staff is small in number, we are able to do only simple searches of short duration. The requirements and regulations are as follows:

All requests must be received in writing. See the About Us for our physical address.
  • Please include a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) if physically mailing a request, or we can include the cost when billing for services.
  • E-mail requests with snail mail addresses are welcomed. You can e-mail the librarian specializing in genealogy searches at: portlibgen@gmail.com.
  • We will undertake searches for which there are definite dates known.
    • (Example: I need an obituary for Mary Jones who died about Feb 10, 1912. NOT I need an obituary for Mary Jones who died in the early 1910s.)
  • Charges will be billed to the requesting person.
  • Currently costs are:
    • search time @ $3 per half hour or portion thereof
    • copies paper-to-paper @ $0.15 each
    • copies microfilm-to-paper @ $0.25 each
    • postage to mail information back to patron (if SASE does not cover all costs).
Please do not send money in advance. If you are unsure of what you need, give us a call or email in advance of your formal request.
