Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.   Story Port begins Monday, and the library will also have another video game night from 7-8 pm. On Thursday next week we’ll have a program for adults on mason jar soups, from 7-8 pm. Call the library if you’d like more information on any of these programs.

Downton Abbey is a popular television series that started and still airs in Great Britian. It follows the lives of the people who live and work at the (fictional) large estate of Downton Abbey.  The series was set beginning in 1912, but subsequent seasons have brought the show through time to the beginning of 1924. Many supplementary books have been published following the interest in that period of British history. The library now has A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey by Jessica Fellowes available for checkout. This thick book is printed with full color photographs from the series, and the information within is loosely arranged according to the months of the year. It is mostly set in the early 1920s. In addition to describing what would happen at a place like Downton Abbey, this book also describes the characters and lets the readers in on what the actors who are playing the characters really think about their roles. Historical recipes are also sprinkled throughout, as are behind the scenes descriptions from the crew of the television series. This is an excellent book for anyone who likes the series, as well as any fan of 1920s fashions and lifestyle.

You can get the book reviewed here and more great titles to watch, read, listen to, or play with at the Port Library at 1718 N. Hersey in Beloit.  This is director Rachel Malay, saying “Thanks for checking us out!”
