Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.

Nora Roberts is a very prolific author, with more than 100 books to her name. And this doesn’t even include her pseudonyms! As Nora Robers, this popular author writes romances, sometimes with a supernatural twist as is in today’s Port Pick: Captivated by Nora Roberts. Although the books were published over 10 years ago, the stories are still popular and the Port Library just recently completed the 4 volumes in the Donovan Legacy series in audiobook. Captivated is the first in the series.

Morgana Donovan and her cousins all share a secret that’s been handed down through the generations, a secret that sets them slightly apart from the rest of society. For Morgana, living as a modern witch isn’t always easy, but then Nash Kirkland comes into her life. Nash is researching for his latest screenplay on witches, ghosts, and other beings. As a skeptic, he isn’t sure he can trust Morgana’s claims she has supernatural powers. But then she demonstrates those powers for him, and Nash finds himself falling under Morgana’s spell.

Our audiobooks check out for two weeks at a time. This title is just under 8 hours long, so if you’re planning a long weekend getaway or just want something to play in the background while you do housework or go to the wellness center, give this a try!

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit. The library would like to wish all our patrons and listeners a Happy Valentine’s Day! We appreciate each one of you, and even if you don’t have plans to celebrate the day, we hope you can come down to the library to find a book, video, game, or CD you love to check out! As a reminder, the library will be closed on Monday for President’s Day.

We’ve all met them or even live with them: polite, pleasant children who turn into Crankenstein when things don’t go their way. Author Samantha Berger and illustrator Dan Santat have brought a particularly grumpy little cherub to life in A Crankenstein Valentine. One grumpy February 14th, Crankenstein’s mother wakes him up with the gift of heart patterned underwear, and our poor anti-hero is further upset by a kiss on the bus, heart shaped food at lunch, valentine crafts and snacks in the afternoon, and worst of all, the role of Cupid in the school play.  But when a girl version of all his crankiness throws a fit on stage, Crankenstein may have found his match!

The colorful illustrations in this book capture all the action that this story has.  Crankenstein’s skin is a puke-green and nearly every shade of pink and red is used throughout. The story is printed in a font specifically designed by the illustrator and subtly adds to the book’s humor. This is short enough for a bed-time read, and be sure to take a look at the endpapers.

Spirited Away (DVD)

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.  Each Saturday I tell you about great items available for check out at the library. The rotating book van makes its scheduled visit next week, so come in Wednesday to see a new selection on the shelves reserved for our rotating collection.

The film director Hayao Miyazaki is to Japan what Walt Disney has been to the US.  In fact, Miyazaki’s production company, Studio Ghibli, was recently bought by Disney.  If you haven’t experienced any film from Studio Ghibli, you’re in for a treat.  All are excellently animated with uplifting storylines and absolutely gorgeous settings, and translated and voiced by some fairly famous Hollywood actors.

The Port Library has recently added Spirited Away to its collection. This movie was produced in 2002. Following a classic fairy tale type storyline this movie centers on Chihiro, a young girl who wanders off the path while on a journey with her parents.  Soon she finds herself trapped in the spirit world controlled by the tyrant grandmother Yabubu and Chihiro’s parents are transformed, unable to get free.  It comes to Chihiro to rescue them and Haku, a strangely familiar young boy comes to Chihiro’s aid.  But Haku is secretly working for Yabubu! Along the way Chihiro must learn resourcefulness, compassion, courage, and politeness.

As a more classic fairy tale, this movie does have some spooky and dark scenes. Most of it is set in Yabubu’s spirit world and may be a bit scary for kids under 5. However, the gorgeous and meticulous animation will be a treat even for adults.

You can get the book reviewed here and more great titles to watch, read, listen to, or play with at the Port Library at 1718 N. Hersey in Beloit.  This is director Rachel Malay, saying “Thanks for checking us out!”

Prince Lestat by Anne Rice

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.

Horror stories aren’t for everyone, and vampire stories aren’t for everyone either, but if you like both you probably enjoy Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles series.  The library has the latest in that series, the first new book published in that series in a decade. Prince Lestat by Anne Rice recalls many, many characters from the series’ previous 12 books and short stories while focusing on its title character, a vampire named Lestat. If the series sounds familiar, it’s because the second in the series was made into the popular movie Interview with the Vampire in 1994.

However, in this installment of the epic series an unknown force called simply The Voice is compelling vampires to destroy their own kind. The prince of the vampires, Lestat rises up to investigate and combat this deadly force, which is not an easy task as these vampires are quite solitary creatures. By the end of this gothic story author Rice even manages to weave in themes of repentance and forgiveness.

Because this story comes late in the series of books, an index and short description of characters in the back of the book will help.  This storyline also takes pauses to recap what has happened in previous books, so this volume can be read on its own without much introduction. At 450 pages, this is not a short read and Anne Rice’s sometimes flowery language does make this action-oriented book thicker, but no less engrossing.
