How to Win at Shopping: 297 Insider Secrets for Getting the Style you Want at the Price you Want to Pay by David Zyla and Eila Mell

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.   Come to the library later this morning for an informational program about the historic Kansas City Monarch’s baseball team and their connection to Beloit. The program starts today at 10:30 am.

Beloit may not have a wide selection of big-name department stores, but I can assure you our city is not lacking in women who still love to shop for the latest clothing fashions!  This week’s Port Pick goes out to women who both love to shop at every opportunity, and also for those who may dread tackling the wide selection out there in retail and outlet stores.

How to Win at Shopping: 297 Insider Secrets for Getting the Style You Want at the Price You Want to Pay by David Zyla and Eila Mell will both help you in the stores and in your own wardrobe as well.  Some tips in the stores include: look outside your own clothing department for staple garments that may be unisex (and cheaper over in the men’s department); start with an idea of what color you’d like, not necessarily the style; and, always sit down in the dressing room when trying on a potential garment. Meanwhile, in your own wardrobe be aware that three quarter length sleeves are flattering on everyone, the top ten staples to always have hanging in your closet, and what a tailor (or a talented friend) can and cannot do to help what you have fit better.

This slim hard-backed volume is small enough to slip into a purse while on your next shopping trip, or you can just check it out in the meantime and glean the best tips and tricks for you and your clothes.

You can get the book reviewed here and more great titles to watch, read, listen to, or play with at the Port Library at 1718 N. Hersey in Beloit.  This is director Rachel Malay, saying “Thanks for checking us out!"

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.   Next Thursday the library will have a program for adults on vintage aprons, including a display of some local collections. All attendees will be entered in a drawing for a free handmade apron.  Call the library by Tuesday if you want to attend. This week’s review comes to us courtesy of the library’s Youth Services Librarian, Andrea Weidenhaft.

I Love Dogs! by Sue Stainton and Bob Staake is a picture book that follows a little boy on his way to the pet shop to adopt a dog.  The young boy has to walk through the large town park on his way to the shop and he sees all different kinds of dogs.  At a sidewalk intersection the boy sees a long red dog in a blue and red plaid shirt. He also sees an old lady cuddling her cozy dog and big strong dog lifting up a trash can. While he’s crossing the bridge he sees racing dogs, chasing dogs, and a little crazy dog that has tangled up his owner! He stops at the water fountain in the park to take a look around. There are dogs playing Frisbee, giving their owners rides, and even riding in baby strollers. He is so happy, he shouts “I LOVE DOGS!”  Will he find a perfect, playful dog of his own or will he have to settle with playing with others?

The authors display the many different personalities and traits that make dogs such wonderful pets in this book full of colorful digitally animated pictures for young readers.

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.   The next few weeks of reviews come to us courtesy of the library’s Youth Services Librarian, Andrea Weidenhaft.

Who Wants a Hug? written and illustrated by Jeff Mack is the story of a very lovable bear that loves to give hugs. Everyone loves Bear’s hugs, except the grouchy Skunk. Skunk thinks that Bear is too happy and gives out way to many hugs! So, Skunk hatches several plans to stop Bear from giving his lovable hugs! In his first plan Skunk tries to sling shot a smelly fish at Bear, but he misses and the fish bounces back and hits Skunk. In his next plan, Skunk tries to drop a huge stinky bag of garbage on Bear but this plan fails too! Skunk thinks up one last trick to stop Bear… but will his final plan work?

This book is great for young readers and parents who love animals and a mix of pencil drawn/computer animated pictures. Make sure you share your hugs after reading this great book! If you enjoyed reading this book we have several others by Jeff Mack available that include Hush Little Polar Bear and Frog and Fly.

Sister Eve, Private Eye by Lynne Hinton

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.

Our readers who happen to appreciate both Christian Fiction and murder mysteries are in for a treat. Today’s Port Pick is a refreshing foray into a new murder mystery direction: a Christian murder mystery. Sister Eve, Private Eye is the first in a new series by Lynne Hinton.

Sister Evangeline Devine has followed her calling to be a nun for over two decades at a monastery in New Mexico. Then one day a police officer appears, carrying a message from her father, who is a police captain turned private detective. Sister Eve’s father needs help recovering from surgery, but soon the good Sister finds herself taking on her father’s latest case.  Lest you think Sister Eve has no skills in the private detective department, she is actually quite good at solving mysteries, having grown up around them. In this case a big shot Hollywood director has disappeared, and the little starlet he’s been dating suddenly isn’t talking. Then the missing man turns up dead and Sister Eve is on the trail with natural instincts leading her closer to the truth. But along the way Sister Eve has a bit of soul searching to do. How can she choose between her vocation as a nun and her natural detective talents?

A study guide in the back of the book will help readers or book clubs explore some of the broader themes in the book.  A second in the series is set to be published later in the year.

All Four Stars by Tara Dairman

Hi!  This is Rachel Malay, director at the Port Library in Beloit.   Next Wednesday the library will have a Mario Party video game night in the Schafer Room after hours: 7-8 PM. And next Thursday the library will have a program for adults and young adults on choosing cozy mysteries. If you like reading mysteries with a softer side, come to hear some new title suggestions and enjoy snacks. For both programs, contact the library by Tuesday to sign up.

Many young people can be picky when it comes to what tastes good. However, this is certainly not the case for eleven year old Gladys Gatsby in All Four Stars by Tara Dairman. In fact, she’s a self-taught gourmet who actually likes weird things such as arugula and crème brulee. However, she’s never come close to eating an entire fancy meal; her parents only eat fast food and microwave meals. Then one day the local newspaper contacts Gladys about becoming a restaurant critic after reading her food reviews in an essay contest. It’s Gladys’ dream job! Only problem is, the newspaper thinks Gladys is an adult. Of course Gladys accepts the job, and now has to find her way into restaurants and submit reviews without any one finding out she’s actually a middle school kid.

This title is a chapter book, aimed for readers who are just about Gladys’ age in real life.  At nearly 300 pages it’s not a thin book, but Gladys’ adventures will keep you turning the page, and you may just find a new food to try out!

You can get the book reviewed here and more great titles to watch, read, listen to, or play with at the Port Library at 1718 N. Hersey in Beloit.  This is director Rachel Malay, saying “Thanks for checking us out!”
